This scrapbook is a compilation of newspaper and magazine clippings, business cards, cartoons, and more regarding the subjects of hypnotism, spiritualism, mentalism, and escapism, as well as more general information about famous performers in these genres. Many of the magazine clippings were written by John Mulholland, magician and editor of Sphinx magazine. Majority of the clippings are exposes on how mediums, magicians and spiritualists fool their audiences. All pieces have been carefully laid in, often layered to keep information together in a more readable fashion. Publications featured in this collection include: Popular Science Monthly, Hearst's International, Real Detective, Modern Mechanics and Inventions, Liberty, The American Magazine, The Illustrated Detective, The Master Detective, The Billboard, Illustrated Magic, The Cosmopolitan as well as many local newspapers. A few of the magicians highlighted among the clippings are Houdini, Blackstone, Robert-Houdin, Mystic Voilan, Thurston, and Tarbell. The sheets are in generally good condition, with considerable toning, chips and tears. The cloth on the album is worn, especially around the edges. A neat collection, presented with visually appealing two-page spreads and thematic groupings of clippings. Overall in good condition. More photographs available upon request.
